Match Report: AS Roma V Lazio 5th January 2025

On 6 January 2025 by Gillyowl

In a highly anticipated clash on the first Sunday of the new year, AS Roma took on bitter rivals Lazio in the latest edition of the Derby della Capitale at the Stadio Olimpico. The atmosphere was electric as thousands of passionate Giallorossi fans filled the stands, creating a sea of red and yellow that set the perfect backdrop for what would become a thrilling encounter. From the first whistle, Roma asserted their dominance, showing superior control and intent. The team, under the astute guidance of Coach Claudio Raniere, displayed a blend of tactical discipline and flair that left Lazio struggling to keep pace. The home side’s pressing game was relentless, forcing Lazio into a series of errors that nearly cost them early on.

Roma’s breakthrough came in the 10th minute when captain Lorenzo Pellegrini, embodying the spirit of the team, picked up the ball 18 yards from goal and surged forward. The heavily criticised captain created space for himself and curled the ball sublimely into the top left corner. The Stadio Olimpico erupted with joy, and the momentum was firmly with the Giallorossi.

Just 8 minutes later, continuing the momentum, Dovbyk and Dybala worked together to release Saelmaekers through on goal. The Belgian tucked home the second goal, to the elation of the home fans.

The second half saw Lazio attempt to regroup, and having the confidence that a win was still possible having won seven away games. Baroni’s men came flying out, but were no match for Mile Silvar, who stood firm and denied both Castellanos and Guendouzi in quick succession.

Lazio refused to give up hope and as their frustration built, tempers became frayed. The referee must have been running out of room in his book by the end of the game with 5 yellow cards and one red for Lazio and 4 yellows for the home team.

The final whistle brought a wave of relief and ecstasy from the Roma fans, who celebrated not only a vital three points but also a complete domination of their city rivals. This performance reinforced Roma’s renewed confidence, with a powerful display that showcased their quality and depth.

As the players savoured the moment, the fans chanted passionately, embodying their unwavering support. The victory in the Derby della Capitale reaffirms Roma’s place in the hearts of its supporters and sets a jubilant tone for the rest of the season. For now, the Eternal City belongs to the Giallorossi!
