Roma Held to a Frustrating Draw at Como Despite Second-Half Red Card
AS Roma battled their way to a hard-earned point on the road against Como, playing much of the second half with ten men in a goalless draw that keeps the Giallorossi unbeaten but leaves them unable to reclaim top spot in Serie A.
While Roma will take some satisfaction from maintaining their unbeaten run, there will undoubtedly be a sense of frustration at missing the opportunity to return to the summit. Como, meanwhile, move up to sixth place, leapfrogging Juventus for the time being.
Chances at Both Ends in an Entertaining First Half
Roma started brightly at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, looking to impose themselves early on. After just six minutes, neat combination play between Gianluca Mancini and Donyell Malen opened up the Como defence, allowing Paulo Dybala to get a shot away. Unfortunately, his low effort lacked the placement needed to beat goalkeeper Jean Butez, who dealt with it comfortably.
Five minutes later, the visitors came even closer. Captain Lorenzo Pellegrini connected beautifully with a first-time effort from the edge of the penalty area, only to see his shot clip the outside of the post and fly wide. It was a frustrating moment for Roma, who had started the match with real intent.
Como gradually found their feet and began to threaten themselves. Trevoh Chalobah fired over the bar, while Maxence Caqueret dragged an effort wide after finding space inside the box. Neither attempt seriously troubled Roma goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, but the home side were beginning to make their presence felt.
Donyell Malen, who had made an impressive start to his Serie A career with six goals in his first five appearances, then came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock. The Dutch forward rounded Butez but, with the angle narrowing, could only find the side netting.
It was a lively opening 45 minutes, with both sides creating opportunities and Roma looking the more dangerous at times. However, despite the promise of an entertaining contest, neither team could find the breakthrough before half-time.
The Giallorossi would need to show plenty of character after the break, particularly with the challenge of securing a result against a determined Como side on their own turf.
