Como 2 – 1 AS Roma
For the travelling faithful of AS Roma, this was the kind of afternoon that leaves you shaking your head — a match where grit, bad luck and a controversial swing of momentum combined to hand Como 1907 a 2–1 win that the Giallorossi will feel should never have slipped away.
Roma exploded out of the blocks with the authority of a side that means business. Despite playing in Europe just days earlier, there was zero sign of fatigue. Within 10 minutes the Giallorossi were in front, and deservedly so. When Stephan El Shaarawy pounced on a dreadful back pass from Sergi Roberto, panic set in for the hosts and Diego Carlos could only haul him down. Referee Davide Massa had no choice but to point to the spot.
Up stepped Donyell Malen, ice in his veins, burying the penalty with total confidence. Seven league goals already since arriving in January — the Dutchman is quickly becoming one of the most lethal weapons in Rome.
From there, the match became a battle. Como had plenty of the ball but repeatedly ran into the brick wall that is Mile Svilar. The Roma goalkeeper produced save after save, first denying Nico Paz, then frustrating Álex Valle, and generally reminding everyone why he’s becoming one of the most reliable keepers in Serie A.
The turning point came after the break. Como threw on Anastasios Douvikas, and the Greek striker managed to squeeze an equaliser through Svilar’s legs — a rare moment where the Roma defence was caught out.
But the real dagger arrived soon after when Wesley França was shown a second yellow card, leaving Roma to wage war with ten men for the final stretch. From that point it was backs-to-the-wall football.
Even then Roma refused to fold. Svilar produced heroics again, flying across his goal to deny Assane Diao, while the defence threw bodies in front of everything. It took a cruel rebound for Como to finally break through, with Diego Carlos of all people stabbing home after Svilar had already made another superb stop from Ivan Smolčić.
It was harsh. Painfully harsh.
Because even with ten men, Roma never stopped fighting. The spirit was there, the belief was there — but the football gods were not wearing Giallorossi colours on this day.
Now the focus turns to Europe, where AS Roma will look to channel that same fighting spirit into their UEFA Europa League clash with Bologna FC 1909 on Thursday night. And if there’s one thing Roma fans know, it’s this: write this team off at your own risk. 🐺🔥
