Match report: Genoa v AS Roma: 8th March 2026

Genoa 2 – 0 AS Roma
Roma supporters will still be feeling the frustration of letting a two–goal lead slip against Juventus last time out, a dramatic 3–3 draw that denied the Giallorossi a statement victory in their push for a UEFA Champions League place. With that in mind, a trip to struggling Genoa CFC looked like the perfect opportunity for AS Roma to get back on track and keep the pressure on the teams above them.
The first half, however, was one most fans would happily forget. Roma struggled to find their rhythm, while Genoa offered slightly more threat without truly troubling the visitors. Junior Messias forced a comfortable save from Mile Svilar, but that was about as exciting as it got before the break. At the other end, Roma rarely tested Justin Bijlow, with a wayward effort from Devyne Rensch the closest they came to breaking the deadlock.
Thankfully, the match came alive after the restart. Genoa were awarded a penalty when Mikael Ellertsson went down in the box under pressure from Lorenzo Pellegrini, and Messias calmly converted from the spot to put the hosts ahead. Roma, though, responded like a team with real quality. From a set piece, Evan Ndicka rose highest to loop a header into the net, moments after Gianluca Mancini had seen an earlier effort cleared off the line. It was a deserved equaliser and a reminder of Roma’s resilience.
While Genoa continued to push, Svilar remained solid between the posts, even producing an impressive save to deny substitute Lorenzo Colombo. But with chances at a premium, the decisive moment went the hosts’ way when substitute Vitinha slid in to convert Patrizio Masini’s low cross and give Genoa the lead.
Roma kept fighting until the final whistle, but the equaliser never arrived. It was a frustrating afternoon for the Giallorossi, who will feel they deserved more and know they have the quality to bounce back quickly. The result leaves Roma just one point ahead of Como 1907 ahead of a crucial clash with Cesc Fàbregas’ side next week — a match that could prove vital in the race for Champions League football.
For Genoa, the victory provides breathing room in the battle at the bottom, while Roma will regroup knowing their season — and their Champions League dream — is far from over. The Giallorossi faithful will be expecting a response. 🟡🔴
