Match Report: AS Roma V Como 2nd March 2025

On 2 March 2025 by Gillyowl

Substitutes Alexis Saelemaekers and Artem Dovbyk played key roles in Roma’s impressive comeback against 10-man Como, who had initially taken the lead through Lucas Da Cunha. This victory marked Roma’s fourth consecutive win in Serie A, continuing their unbeaten streak since their last encounter with Como, which resulted in a 2-0 loss back in December. Despite Dovbyk not being at full fitness, Matias Soulè adapted well to a wide-right position while Mats Hummels remained on the bench. Como came into the match with a solid momentum, having defeated Fiorentina and Napoli in their previous games, but were hampered by injuries to key players and the absence of coach Cesc Fabregas due to a touchline ban.

Marc Kempf came close with a header from a Lucas Da Cunha cross after a quick corner, and Paulo Dybala attempted a shot with his less favored right foot, but found Jean Butez ready to make the save on the lay-off from Soule. Roma was having a tough time finding their rhythm, and just before halftime, Como capitalized on the moment with Maxi Perrone delivering a spot-on through ball, allowing Da Cunha to skillfully maneuver around Gianluca Mancini and slot the ball past the advancing Mile Svilar for the opening goal.

Dovbyk and Stephan El Shaarawy stepped onto the pitch as the second half kicked off, while the home side couldn’t believe Ivan Smolcic was on thin ice with a potential second yellow for a risky tackle on El Shaarawy. Patrick Cutrone nearly broke through but shot directly at Svilar, only for Roma to level the score thanks to the brilliance of Saelemaekers, who made an immediate impact just two minutes after coming on. He sped down the right, linked up well with Zeki Celik, and after a slight deflection off Alex Valle, the ball sailed over Butez and into the net. The challenge for Como intensified when Marc Kempf picked up a second yellow for taking down Dybala, leaving them a man short.

Though Como thought they found the back of the net with an assist from Patrick Cutrone, the goal was disallowed due to his offside position. Despite Celik’s exit due to injury, Roma’s substitutes shone, with Bryan Cristante delivering a perfect pass for Devyne Rensch, who set up Dovbyk to score from close range. Como put up a valiant fight and almost equalized when Mergim Vojvoda hit the post, but El Shaarawy missed the chance to seal the win, stumbling before his shot against Butez.

Roma Club Bristol was buzzing with excitement at Ye Shakespeare, gathering the largest crowd of 2025! With over 30 enthusiastic fans rallying behind the Giallorossi, the atmosphere was electric as they proudly cheered for their beloved team.
