On 14 March 2025 by GillyowlAthletic Club 3 – 1 AS Roma
Roma’s hopes in the Europa League came crashing down after an early red card to Mats Hummels turned the tide in their away clash against Athletic Club, leading to a disappointing 3-1 defeat. Despite their strong performance back in Rome just a week prior, the Giallorossi struggled to cope with the numerical disadvantage following the controversial sending-off. Goalkeeper Mile Svilar showcased impressive skills, making several crucial saves to keep Roma in contention, but the night ultimately belonged to Athletic Club as they capitalized on Roma’s misfortunes, sending them out of the tournament.
In a thrilling match, Athletic Club showcased their prowess, with Nico Williams coming close early on when he hit the post with a stunning curler.
Roma struggled to capitalize on their chances, with Angelino’s cross not finding a teammate in the box. Just before halftime, Williams broke through, scoring despite a deflection. In the second half, Shomurodov had a golden opportunity denied by Agirrezabala, while Svilar made a fantastic save from Berenguer. A corner taken by Angelino led to Yuri’s towering header that doubled Athletic’s lead.
Williams then dazzled with a solo effort to extend the scoreline, before Roma’s late penalty from Paredes brought them a consolation goal that ultimately did little to salvage their qualification hopes.
